then you are officially sick, according to the latest report by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The organisation has updated its list of International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and has added “gaming disorder” under the section of "disorders due to addictive behavior".
WHO describes “gaming disorder” as “Disorders due to addictive behaviours are recognizable and clinically significant syndromes associated with distress or interference with personal functions that develop as a result of repetitive rewarding behaviours other than the use of dependence-producing substances. Disorders due to addictive behaviors include gambling disorder and gaming disorder, which may involve both online and offline behaviour.”
For those unaware, ICD is the foundation for the identification of health trends and statistics globally, and the international standard for reporting diseases and health conditions. “It is the diagnostic classification standard for all clinical and research purposes. ICD defines the universe of diseases, disorders, injuries and other related health conditions,” according to WHO.
Gaming addiction along with excessive use of Internet, computers and smartphones were first recognised as “potentially harmful” behaviour last year in June.
In India, online games like
Mobile is considered as a major distraction for school and college-going kids and several parents have expressed their desire for the game to be banned. Meanwhile, in a case which depicted height of Player Unknown Battleground (PUBG) addiction, a 19-year-old woman, who is a mother of less than a year old child, dialled state's women's helpline Abhayam 181, seeking help for divorce to unite with her PUBG gaming partner.
